Guiseppe Zanotti, I’m cheating on you with Charlotte Olympia

Charlotte Olympia is a shoe genius. Her shoes have a tendency toward girl-hot fashion more than guy-hot fashion, but that’s a trait shared by most accessories and apparel that double as wearable art.

Freakum-dress Friday: Attention all attenion-loving Aries babies

One of the most fun-loving, dynamic signs of the zodiac, it was beyond easy to be inspired by the Aries astrological sign for today’s Freakum-dress Friday. Although I’ve never known an Aries to NOT abhor drama, I’ve never seen one shy away from it either, whether the drama is personal or fashionable. And since we’re dealing with the cardinal sign of all the fire signs, it had to be an outfit bold enough to suit the leading-lady-esque Aries woman wearing it. Continue reading

Dirty Hair: Go Ahead, Make My Day.

If you don’t get the title, it’s supposed to be like “Dirty Harry.” Dirty Hair-y. Ahyukhyukhyuk!

-_-

Ahem.

Do you enjoy having squeaky-clean hair? Do you wash your hair every day, or every other day?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then I hate to break it to you, but daily mane maintenance is OUT.  Your hair-hygiene routine is like, SO last decade! The oilier the locks, the more a person rocks. If you just washed your hair, honey, you ain’t got no flair.

…I’m kidding, of course. Well, half-kidding. Kidding in the sense that nothing is  ever really “out” to me (except for hippie headbands; those needed a big RIP about a year after their heyday in 2008, which was around the time Aubrey O’Day was rocking them on the final season of Making the Band 4 — unless, of course, you’re actually a hippie), especially when it comes to beauty preferences, since, unlike fashion, where different clothing styles can be deemed “in fashion” or “out of fashion” by The Fashion Powers That Be, I don’t think any authority in the world could change what an individual intrinsically finds beautiful, and therefore (to me at least) beauty transcends fashion on the subjectivity ladder.

Aubrey O'Day and her ubiquitous hippie headband, back in 2008. That was four years ago. If you haven't graduated from this look already, let's talk. I'll help you find a style tutor. And P.S. I have no idea how often she washes HER mound of extensions hair.

But anyway, enough with my heavy tangent on what might as well be the topic for my future thesis, let’s get back to talking about dirty hair. Continue reading

A video of Jean Paul Gaultier at AAU

HERE is the video of Jean Paul Gaultier’s visit to Academy of Art University.

And while I originally watched this packed in a room full of my peers, instructors, and exponentially-rising body heat, when I see this video what I am most reminded of is how the rush from across downtown SF, the wait, and the extremely uncomfortable auditorium situation was TOTALLY worth it, just to hear The Man speak.

If you don’t have time to watch the whole thing, make sure you skip to 16:00, when JPG shares some inspiring words of career wisdom.

Studying with the future of fashion: A brief chat w/ Amy Kim

Going to an art school can be the most gratifying experience in the world for creative minds… and also one of the most intimidating! When you’re used to being one of a few art and design enthusiasts in a larger community of people with more conventional ambitions, nothing can be more humbling than to suddenly be bombarded with other people who not only share the same passions as you, but are crazy-uber talented and driven as well…not to mention often very stubbornly set in their artistic viewpoints. And for someone (me) battling a natural shy-girl tendency (yes, really), reaching out to different people in such an environment requires more effort than most would imagine. But, as it turns out, most students turn out to be quite approachable, each with his or her own back story as interesting and unique as their design/styling/art aesthetic.

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting for a couple of minutes with one of said students: Fashion Design major and soon-to-be Academy of Art University graduate, Amy Kim (who also sits next to me every week in our Fashion Blogging class).

Amy Kim

It doesn’t take very long for her to explain how she decided on pursuing fashion as a career. Amy, 22, practically has fashion design running through her DNA: her mother designs clothing for her own stores in Korea, Amy’s native country, and Japan, with expansion stores in the States on the horizon. Happy Monday! Make it a beautiful week. 🙂

Broads who brunch.

What’s better than a Sunday Funday that begins with a mimosa brunch? How about a Sunday Funday with a mimosa brunch while wearing a FLAWLESS spring outfit?

And don’t be surprised if I pull a small jar of Nutella out of my oversized clutch to smear on my pancakes. 🙂

Freakum-dress Friday: Pin-up chic

Friday already?! WOW, time flies when you’re recovering from the flu, midterms, and Jean Paul Gaultier visiting your school.

This weekend I’ll be spending a lot of time with my parents, who are visiting me from San Diego (read: Ruby Skye, I’ll see you NEXT weekend), and it’s putting me in a very vintage-y mood. Inspired by the pin-ups ladies from the decade both my parents were born, it’s a classically sexy look to get your weekend off on the right foot. Continue reading

Atelier? You mean ateli-“YAY!” AAU retailer more than just t-shirts and hoodies

at·el·ier:

n.

A workshop or studio, especially for an artist or designer.

(from The Free Dictionary)

Halfway into my second semester at Academy of Art University, I finally popped into the school Atelier to see what it was all about. And really, the reason it took me a semester and a half to step foot in there in the first place was because I thought all it was, was just a bunch of AAU sweatshirts, totes, and pencils in ashop too pretentious to be called a “store,” so they named it an “Atelier” instead. And as a fashion anything major (design, merchandising, journalism, PR) it’s among the Deadly Sins to wear a sweatshirt to class (right up there with Ugg boots), so I assumed I could spend my time at school missing out on the Atelier, without really missing out on anything.

But OMG, was I SO wrong.

While they did sell school sweatshirts (and totes, and pencils), they had SO much more. The first thing to catch my eye was a cleanly merchandised rack of Lan Jaenicke apparel:

I can't decided whether I like the green or pink version of the coat better.

And right behind that, in the center back of the store was an adorable array of children’s clothing by Andrea Banwart for J’Adorable designs: Continue reading

SF Indie Fashion runs down the best SD vintage fashion shops

I freak out whenever I hear anyone reference San Diego while I’m up here in San Francisco (my voice literally comes out like two octaves higher and 18 decibels louder), and I was no less excited when I saw this article about San Diego vintage stores on my favorite San Francisco fashion blog. Check it out 🙂

And P.S., Frock You is ah-MAY-zing.
